An Isle of Hope Christmas Tour of Homes

It's only a short walk to Isle of Hope Marina, the Community Pool, the playground and Isle of Hope Elementary (K-8). Don't miss your chance to build your dream home on one the few remaining vacant lots on Isle of Hope. It grew from a struggling colonial outpost to a sleepy seaside village, to a summer retreat for the city’s elite, to a nationally known resort destination, to Savannah’s choice saltwater suburb. This unhurried growth over so many years created a unique community with a rare sense of history. An original brick staircase, double-decker front porches, and a columned exterior strike a commanding presence at the Jaakkolas' home.

1 Noble Glen, built in 1820, the oldest house on Isle of Hope. I'll bet there was plenty to ooh and aahhh about. I wonder if this home used to have a double porch and they closed in the lower section.

Just outside the entrance to the marina, a street ran along the edge of the marina and the river. It was lined with homes that had us oohing and ahhing. There were too many wonderful homes to share in one post so I’ll share the rest in a second post tomorrow morning. As wonderful as these are, the homes in the second post turned out to be my favorites, so you’ll definitely want to see Part II of this Isle of Hope home tour. I'm in love love love with the house at the end of the street with the different blues.

To me that is the most beautiful place ever. Off the kitchen is a keeping room that serves as the default cocktail lounge when guests come over and is an example of Jaakkola's knack for combining styles, textures, and materials effortlessly. "I love really modern elements and very old things with patina, and I think when you put them together in a room, they capture your interest even more," she says. Here, industrial metal end tables are juxtaposed with delicate glass lamps and a casual slipcovered settee. The rugged wood-topped cocktail table and botanical artwork (both scored at Atlanta's South of Market) connect the whole setup to the outdoors.

The road fronts upon the Skidaway River, the porched houses and their landscaped gardens on one side and the river and marsh, punctuated by dozens of boats and private jetties, on the other. After restoring the living room's original fireplace and giving the mantle a fresh coat of white paint, Jaakkola clad the wall behind it in antiqued mirror. "Mirrors always make a room look bigger and the antique finish adds a lot of interest," says Jaakkola. The reflective wallcovering also helps to further brighten up an already light-filled space, made so with large folding windows that lead out onto the front porch. Two slipcovered sofas offer soft, fuss-free places to land in the living room.

The colossal upstairs loft is big enough for impromptu family dance recitals; and the flowing cafĂ© area, gathering room, and kitchen will inspire you to entertain. The hidden-away Owner’s Suite offers serenity downstairs. And the Pulte Planning Center® proves invaluable for staying organized.

What are the schools and amenities like in Isle of Hope?

Wonderful Isle of Hope all brick home with hardwood floors in the Paxton Heights area. 4-bedroom 3 bath home has a mother-in-law suite, separate living and dining rooms, fireplace, den or sunroom, and new owner can apply for membership at Wymberly Dock. I know this post was published several years ago, but I just visited it from your archives. That porch was not glassed in originally.

There are moths, but not spiders so I'm hoping there is something to this old wives tale. Matter of fact, I love all your post. The homes you share with us today are just amazing, can't wait for tomorrow. I could feel passion and love coming thru these pictures and touched my entire being. What wonderful photos of gorgeous homes. I love American homes, so thanks for sharing the piccies.

To up the curb appeal even more, she swapped Victorian-style railings for simpler white ones and painted the front door powder blue —a nod to the home's setting on the water. "Our goal was to keep everything as close to original as possible," she says. Come see this Darling 3/2 home with enclosed den added for great family space or sun room.

It’s been about a year or so I think since I first saw that listing and I don’t think there were as many pictures back then. This would be a good one to post a tour of on the blog. Looks like a great place to go exploring. I can't wait to see Part II of your post.

Property #8

I grew up right there off Bluff Drive by the marina and walked or rode my bike up and down it every day. One of the few things I miss about living in Chatham County. This home has a big screened-in porch.

The table is set with elegant china, crystal and silver and hundreds of twinkling votives. Soft breezes from the Skidaway River gently rustle the Spanish moss hanging from the Live Oaks overhead. Music fills the air and you are surrounded by friends. It’s a wonderful night…here out on the lawn. With a rich history that extends all the way down to its furniture and accessories, this is a home with more than a few stories to tell.

Home #2

Currently set up as a duplex, could be a single family home; or live in one side and rent the other side. UNIT A is UNDER CONSTRUCTION; Seller is in the process of working on some wonderful renovations. UNIT B is ready for a tenant or new owner.

The picturesque setting of Isle of Hope has been well preserved by film’s time capsule for over 60 years. From Bluff Drive’s sun-dappled view of the Skidaway river, to the historic homes that charm the riverside community, it’s impossible to deny Isle of Hope’s cinematic appeal. This two-storey frame vernacular cottage was built with its gable facing the street. This, like the cottage at 25 Brown Street , exhibits the character of cottages of this period in history, which aspired to a classical style temple. This is further developed with a wrap-around porch with classical details in the columns with capitals. A metal roof adds much to the charm of this ground level porch.

The massive custom corkboard features a frame Jaakkola had fashioned from strips of wood she picked up on a whim at an antiques show. Following the Civil War, formerly enslaved African Americans from Wormsloe Plantation established a settlement inland around Parkersburg Road. Modern day filmmakers have taken advantage of Isle of Hope’s varying architecture of this time, which ranges from Greek Revival, Victorian Eclectic, Neoclassical, and Craftsman/Bungalow. It’s no surprise that these historic structures and timeless water views have been featured in period pieces and modern shows alike. Set far back from the street, a row of Japanese crab apple trees leads to the one-storey brick cottage.

By the pic, it looked like a small-ish cottage style, just my size. Umm, yea, it’s a deceptive view, as seen in the “it’s for sale” photo collection. I've never posted before, but wanted to share, I painted the ceiling on my front porch this summer Haint Blue. We've have spiders build huge webs summer after summer and so far, there are no spiders on my porch.
